It is my pleasure and privilege to write a foreword for the third edition of Kapur & Suri's Basic Human Genetics written by senior teachers, Drs Dipali J Trivedi and Paras S Shrimankar. This book is very well structured and easy to understand. It introduces reader to the basic concepts of genetics. The chapters are nicely presented having necessary information with adequate figures and tables. Editors have made an excellent attempt to present the complex topics of subject in the most simplified way so that it can serve MBBS students, as well as the students from allied medical sciences such as Dental, Nursing, etc. The book is very well written and designed, so I hope, students would like to read and gain required knowledge of the subject.

Genetics is a rapidly expanding field of the medical science. All components of the human body are influenced by the genes, so knowing the basic concepts of human genetics are essential in the diagnosis, management and prevention of various disorders. Every person related to medical field needs to know the fundamental aspects of the genetics. The third edition of Kapur & Suri's Basic Human Genetics is written after a long span of around 25 years. The book deals in initial chapters with introduction, structure of chromosome and its abnormalities. In this edition, efforts have been made to add information regarding a brief history of genetics and classification of chromosome. In the chapter of chromosomal abnormalities, attempt has been made to provide information related to more genetic syndromes. For better understanding of various chromosomal abnormalities, the text is augmented with related illustrations. The other chapters serve topics on genes, inheritance, population genetics, prevention and treatment of genetic diseases. The study of patterns of inheritance is important for the diagnosis, prognosis and estimation of the recurrence risk in other family members. To make it more understandable, different types of inheritance are presented with pedigree analysis. Emphasis has also been made on latest techniques for prenatal diagnosis. The present edition gives an overview of the Human Genome Project, which is the most ambitious project of biomedical researches.
It is hoped that the book will meet the requirements of every reader. We have tried to minimize the errors during preparation of the edition. We would be grateful to the readers for any feedback regarding lacunae in the content of the book.

Basic Human Genetics is designed to be an introduction to the fundamentals of human genetics. The text has been arranged in small classified parts. It is adequately illustrated with simple line diagrams. Tabulated form of the text has been used for quick reading and lasting memory. The practical applications of genetics to clinical medicine are stressed throughout the book. The attempt has been made to meet the requirements of medical students. We shall be grateful to the readers for their suggestions to improve the book.
