Abstract

The main objective of this chapter is to introduce the scar revision. An ideal scar is one that has matured rapidly without contracture or increase in width or formation of more collagen than is necessary for its strength. It is nearly impossible to have such an ideal scar despite adopting the best surgical technique and utmost wound care. Scar revision is one of the most commonly requested procedures particularly for the scars over the exposed and cosmetically important areas such as the face. A holistic approach to the patient undergoing scar revision is desirable and requires extensive preoperative assessment including that of patients psychological state, technical skills and expertise, realistic expectations for achieving satisfactory outcome. This chapter also provides appropriate detail about the patient expectation, ideal scar, scar classification, factors affecting wound healing, assessment of scars and timing of the scar revision surgery. Scar analysis and planning, surgical methods, etc. are also given in this chapter.
