fm7Foreword
Ever since the days of Florence Nightingale, intensive care has been evolving as a specialty. We have seen a rapid expansion in intensive care medicine over the last decade. It is a very complex field that combines the skills and knowledge from almost all the specialties in medicine. When a patient is unstable anywhere in the hospital, patients and physicians look for answers from the intensive care team. This makes the specialty highly satisfying. As the specialty spreads globally, new advances are seen on a daily basis. The manual, divided into 20 chapters, has been excellently planned to include all the topics relevant to the practice of intensive care medicine encompassing the recent advances. This book can be used as the bedside management of patients by the students and nurses alike. The chapters contains ‘Golden tips’ and ‘Further readings’ that makes it unique. The readers can explore the subject in more detail with this feature. I wish Dr Singh all the success with this book and sincerely hope that this book will be utilized widely in the field of intensive care medicine.

fm9Foreword
The expansion of the specialty of intensive care medicine has captured the interest of the healthcare professionals worldwide. Our ability to combine clinical practice, based on a solid platform of basic science and technological advances, makes intensive care medicine an attractive and exciting specialty which has the potential to have a major impact on patient outcomes now and in the future.
The key to the delivery of high quality intensive care is in the education and training of healthcare staff at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Dr Singh combines his passion for education with his expertise in intensive care in producing this manual. It will be an excellent companion to students and residents alike, providing the core knowledge which the practicing intensivist will need to deliver a safe and informed clinical care.
The chapters in the manual are well thought out to encompass all the areas of practice commonly seen in the ICU and make a quick and succinct reference which covers the key aspects of the subject matter. It is an ideal text to have ‘on the shelf’ in the ICU ward with some very useful features within chapters, such as the ‘Golden tips’ which highlight key aspects of a particular subject.
I hope readers of this manual find it interesting, informative and enjoyable. Most of all, I hope this manual will stimulate readers to follow a career in intensive care medicine—a fascinating, challenging and most rewarding specialty.
