Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to focus on the medical management of hyperglycemia in type 1 diabetes mellitus in girls. Diabetes mellitus is one of the commonest endocrine disorders affecting children. Managing diabetes in children and adolescents can often be a tightrope walk for the healthcare provider owing to certain unique aspects involved in the care of this delicate population cohort, more so in the young girls. Unique challenges to diabetes management in this age group include problems in self-care abilities, supervision in school or child care facilities, neurocognitive vulnerability to hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, and potential comorbidity of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). This chapter covers the glycemic control, insulin therapy, glucose monitoring, chronic poor metabolic control, diabetes self-management education and psychosocial support, psychological/psychiatric risks, insulin resistance at puberty, eating disorders, prevention and intervention, and transition to adult care.
