Abstract

This chapter gives an overview on retinal detachment (RD). Retina consists of ten layers spanning from the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) till the internal limiting membrane. Retinal detachment (RD) implies separation of the neurosensory retina from the underlying RPE. The separation is prone to happen at this level because of the presence of a potential space between these two layers which is due to their separate embryological origin. Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, tractional retinal detachment, combined retinal detachment, and exudative retinal detachment are different types of RD Based on the pathological mechanisms. Pathophysiology of posterior vitreous detachment, management of posterior vitreous detachment, peripheral retinal lesions predisposing to retinal detachment, retinal tufts, treatment of predisposing lesions, diagnosis and preoperative assessment of retinal detachment, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, etc. are some other important topics covered in this chapter.
