Writing of this Atlas was started with the idea that most textbooks of diabetes mellitus had too much research and not enough clinical information for the daily work of a physician. For that reason, we, the Editors, tried to find authors who are seeing patients in each one of their specialties everyday. Every chapter was written with the idea of how to explain each particular subject to a busy physician in a clear and concise manner.
We also wanted to give a more universal view to our Atlas, and hence we included authors from different parts of the world or with international know how, because we hope, that this will be of help to many physicians in many countries.
As you all know diabetes mellitus keeps increasing everywhere. At the same time, science and clinical research in parallel runs a more rapid pace than in the past, which may lead to gaps in knowledge for the practicing physician. Having a handy Atlas such as this, we hope, will help to keep them uptodate. Physicians are now under more pressures, many absolutely bureaucratic, and we barely have the time to do our clinical work. It has been said that “Time is money”. For practicing physicians and doctors “Time is health” and being able to solve clinical problems rapidly with an Atlas like ours should be of help.
We had many challenges in the preparation of the Atlas, but our authors overcame all of them, and we are honored to be able to present it to you today. It is only the first one. We hope to publish in the future other similar, practical textbooks to cover the entire subject of diabetes. At the same time, based on the response that we will certainly receive from many readers, we are planning to have subsequent edition of this Atlas in future.
We invite the readers to let us know their comments, ideas, suggestions, additions and critics of our work at the email “agarwalclinic@gmail.com; arolla@comcast.net”. It will certainly help us to better prepare the future editions.

Acknowledgments
Clinical Atlas of Diabetes Mellitus has been a memorable journey. It was a pleasure to work on the book during the entire course of its compilation.
It all began with my meeting over dinner with Dr Arturo R Rolla on a windy night in Boston. During our friendly banter, we realized that there were very few books which taught diabetes through pictures and algorithms. The idea to compile such a book germinated from the meeting and we promised to look at our own archives to see whether we could write one.
It is always difficult to put together such a book because very few clinicians take pictures of clinical conditions and catalog them. To add tables, flow diagrams and points of view are difficult because you need to have an in-depth knowledge of the subject. We were very fortunate to be joined by our contributing authors, who authorities in their areas of expertise, have written brilliant chapters. The book is a must read by any practicing clinician who treats diabetes. The ideas and concepts have been written with great clarity and learning has been facilitated with pictures where possible. We thank all the authors for their humongous effort and time to write these chapters.
I would like to thank Dr Arturo R Rolla, who has been the soul of the book and with his direction and vision this book has been made possible to publish.
I would also like to thank all our families for giving us time to write every chapter of this book. They are our inspiration.
My final acknowledgement goes to the entire team of M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd, New Delhi, India, who worked very hard to put together such an attractive compilation. The book will be proudly kept on our table for reference.
