Renal Biopsy Interpretation

The book has been written to target and facilitate the routine diagnostic reporting of renal biopsies by postgraduate residents, fellows and consultants in the Departments of Pathology, Nephrology and Pediatric Nephrology.
The respective chapters begin with the normal histology of glomerular, tubulointerstitial and vascular compartments of the renal parenchyma and succinctly details the pathognomonic light microscopic, immunofluorescent and electron microscopic features of the various renal diseases. The text is comprehensively elucidated with excellent photomicrographs. Diagnostic features of renal allograft biopsies and rarer entities are highlighted to provide immediate and vital details that lead to the final diagnosis at the work bench beside the microscope.
The book also includes the recent classifications and scoring systems of some of the primary and secondary systemic renal diseases that have been currently validated at the Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India.
I am really grateful for the vast experience and skilled expertise that I have gained at the Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore in the 26 years that I have been reporting renal biopsies. The sabbatical leave granted to me by the administration has enabled me to fulfil the commitment to complete this manuscript.
I sincerely hope that this will become a valuable resource for pathology and nephrology trainees and faculty involved in the discipline.
Anila Korula
Acknowledgments
I wish to first express my heartfelt gratitude to God Almighty and our Savior for the teaching, instruction and invaluable experience I have gained in all aspects of renal pathology.
I am very thankful to my beloved husband, Dr Roy John Korula; loving children, Pritish and Ashika, and my mother Dr Rachel Chacko, for their constant, prayerful support and great encouragement from the start to completion of this book.
I am grateful for the excellent postgraduate training I received at the Christian Medical College, Vellore, one of the premier institutes in India. I am also truly indebted to all my Professors, now retired from service, and all my colleagues in the Department of Pathology, CMC Vellore, whom I had the privilege to work with during my time there. I am also truly grateful to all my students who encouraged and motivated me to share my experience, and write this book.
I acknowledge with gratitude, the electron micrographs provided previously from Dr Larson, a Visiting Nephropathologist from USA, the central electron microscopic facility, including the present pathologists, Dr Anna Pulimood and Dr Smitha Mary Matthai and the currently available open access Internet resources.
