FOREWORD
It is my pleasure to write a foreword for the second edition of the book, “Higher Neural Functions—A Clinical Approach” authored by Dr M Madhusudanan, Dr A Anand Kumar, and Dr Arun N Babu. Higher brain functions encompass a wide range of perceptual, behavioral, emotional, and cognitive processes. Dysfunction involving these processes can occur at the network, cellular, subcellular, electrical, or genetic level. The working of the brain with regard to higher mental functions constitutes one of the most poorly understood branches of neuroscience. Despite the recent technological advances in defining brain areas and networks connecting them that are involved in normal and disturbed higher mental functioning, such as structural and functional neuroimaging (both resting state and event-related), electroencephalography, magnetoencephalography, and positron emission tomography and their coregistration with structural imaging, connectomics, and gene-regulatory network analysis, how the human brain performs higher mental functions at an organizational level still largely remain a mystery.
This book describes how the human brain performs higher mental functions and how particular symptoms or signs may suggest certain types of pathology in specific brain regions. The 10 chapters of this book have touched on almost every aspect of the diagnosis and management of disorders of higher mental functions. Each chapter, although comprehensive, is organized in a systematic manner. The end product is a book dealing with complex domains of higher mental functions in depth and breadth but in an easily readable and understandable way. I am certain that the information provided in this book will be immensely useful to neurologists, pediatricians, psychologists, psychiatrists, and postgraduate students in these specialties. This book “Higher Neural Functions—A Clinical Approach,” now in its second edition, explores the known basis of advanced neural functions including attention, language, memory, perception, and higher cognitive and emotional functions. This is one of the most fascinating as well as poorly understood areas of science.
The first chapter deals with a general approach to understanding neural function. The second chapter deals with the basis of attention. The third chapter explores the human brain's use of language. The fourth chapter deals with the basis of memory. The fifth chapter looks at higher cognitive functions and processing. The sixth and seventh chapters deal with the higher processing of sensory stimuli, especially vision. The eighth chapter looks at the basis of our overall perception of ourselves and the environment. The ninth chapter addresses the basis of higher motor functions and programming. The last chapter explores what is known about the neural basis of human emotion. The second edition of this book has been updated and improved with further additions, clarifications, and figures.
With the authors’ extensive experience in neurology teaching and practice, the emphasis has been on simplicity and clarity in describing anatomical and physiological concepts, as well as detailed clinical descriptions to demonstrate the effects of dysfunction. Important concepts have been reviewed from a wide range of sources. Numerous references have been provided to assist in further study as needed.
