With the release of the 19th Annual Volume (RAP-19: Hot Topics) and, simultaneously, the 21st Special Volume (RAP Special Vol 21: Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care), the noted international series, Recent Advances in Pediatrics, completes its two decades of uninterrupted publication. At this proud moment, we take the opportunity to salute all those who contributed to the success of this academic venture, directly or indirectly. We are conscious of the fact that the entry of the series into the third decade means not just maintaining the high academic standard of the contents but attaining yet greater excellence across the board.
The 34 state-of-the-art chapters of the present volume contributed by as many as 44 experts drawn from India and several other countries attempt to review the depth and breadth of knowledge in the field of contemporary pediatrics with special reference to its applicability in the Indian subcontinent.
A plethora of topics ranging from the liver transplantations and rickets through the refractory epilepsies and antenatal steroids to primary immunodeficiency and respiratory allergies are discussed threadbare. As a special feature, over and above the general/miscellaneous topics, the treatise incorporates an outstanding Spotlight on Medicolegal Aspects of Pediatrics. This, as you would appreciate, is an important area that has by and large remained marginalized by the pediatricians, more notably in the Indian subcontinent.
Each and every chapter is remarkable by its excellence, providing a stimulating and, not infrequently, even provocative, matured and informed update. Understandably, such an approach is befitting when the goal is not only to inform but also to motivate discussion, interaction, research and innovation.
In keeping with the professed policy of the series, multidisciplinary approach with an eye on future continues to occupy pride of place in the present volume too.
We wish to record our indebtedness to our distinguished contributors for providing excellent state-of-the-art chapters on various topical issues in child health. They were also gracious enough to repose confidence in our editorship. Without their understanding and cooperation and comradeship, this volume would not have seen the light of the day.
Our gratitudes are also due to our peer-reviewers, drawn from India and abroad for, as always, critically reviewing the contributions and providing us the benefit of their expertise. They graciously exhibited the promptness in responding to our requests for speedy action. Undoubtedly, it was largely their assessment that proved crucial in the selection of the chapters for incorporation in the present volume.12
Thanks are also due to the Advisory Editorial Board for providing inputs and advice in various editorial matters without reservation.
The moral support and motivation provided by the management and administration of the Narayana Medical College and Hospitals, especially P Narayana, Chairman, CL Venkatarao, Adviser, BA Ramakrishna, Principal and P Narasimha Rao, Medical Superintendent and S Vijay Kumar, Coordinator towards successful completion of this project is gratefully acknowledged.
Our daughter, Novy, and son, Er Manu, voluntarily provided all sorts of assistance in taking the project to its logical conclusion despite their preoccupation. We do appreciate their thoughtfulness.
Our gratitudes are due to M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd and their dedicated staff for the skillful production qualities of the book.
