7Foreword
Pharmacology, the “Science of Drugs”, forms a part of regular curriculum of many streams like medical, dental, pharmacy and veterinary courses at undergraduate as well as postgraduate levels. Though the fundamentals of drug action form an essential part of pharmacology teaching in every discipline, other components are required to be focused according to the need and scope of that particular branch. Hence, the contents and their presentation have to be specifically designed for the respective users. A balance between the essential details and not so important details has to be maintained. Over and above, the language must be easy to comprehend and treatise should be interesting enough. Side by side, highlighting of important aspect is also necessary.
This book “Basics in Pharmacology for Dental Students” is intended to be a textbook of pharmacology for the undergraduate students of dentistry and to my understanding, it meets with all the above-mentioned yardsticks. I hope it will be a useful companion for the teachers and will be able to fulfill the need of the students in making them proficient according to the prescribed syllabus and guide them in their future clinical practice.

9Preface
Dear Students,
While studying pharmacology in my third MBBS, I often experienced the overwhelming need for a good, updated, single, complete exam-oriented book of pharmacology, incorporating and intensifying many basics to face the exams in a more planned manner. This book is a sincere effort by me to fill the void, especially in pharmacology for dental students (BDS & MDS) and professionals.
It has been my constant endeavor to ensure that this book is very much exam oriented for both undergraduate and postgraduate dental students while containing a wealth of details to facilitate better understanding of the subject.
A primary strength to this book is that it incorporates all the details in very simple and explanatory sentences (points). Emphasis has been placed on good presentation of the topics by maintaining the continuity of the text. Explanatory sketches, diagrams and photographs are there, wherever needed. Keywords are highlighted in the bold prints.
While no stones have been left unturned to make this book error free, I sincerely apologize for any mistake that may have escaped my notice.
I truly hope my sincere efforts will be appreciated by you.
Arvind Singh Panwar
