The need for arthrodesis in the current scenario of surface replacement, cemented and uncemented total hip replacement (THR) arthroplasty with the promise of improved functional results may be questioned. The THR is easier and more pleasurable to perform than hip arthrodesis. Intra-articular arthrodesis, extraarticular arthrodesis and combined intra extra-articular arthrodesis are three categories of arthrodesis of the hip. Systemic inflammatory disease, bilateral hip disease, a patient with stiff spine, limited life-expectancy as in malignancy, patients on long-term corticosteroid and ipsilateral knee involvement are the contraindications of hip arthrodesis. General considerations, recommended optimal positions, combined intra extra-articular arthrodesis, anterior plating technique, double-plating technique, anterolateral plate, operative procedure, arthrodesis in children, arthrodesis in special situations, gait in a fused hip, function after arthrodesis and total hip replacement after hip fusion are the different technique of hip arthrodesis.
