14Foreword
The Clinical dermatology atlas project in IADVL has been in the making since 2011—initially, it was conceived as an online atlas. It has now been completed as a print atlas with an exhaustive list of about 2,600 images of skin conditions—common and rare, mundane and esoteric, typical and atypical.
It is a collaborative effort of several contributors from across India—under the editorship of Dr Biju Vasudevan and Dr Manas Chatterjee. They have toiled hard to collect the images, to edit, to prepare legends and then to finalize the chapters and the book—my compliments to them and all the contributors. The fact that print atlas has been completed in one year shows how such collaborative efforts can be completed in a limited time frame, with zeal and enthusiasm.
I am happy that this atlas is in the hands of leaders—I am sure it will be highly useful and serve the needs of students, teachers and practitioners alike.

16Message from IADVL Academy
It is indeed a momentous occasion for the IADVL and the IADVL Academy that the IADVL Color Atlas of Dermatology is being published with images from the collection of our members.
This atlas, which was initially conceived as an online repository, has now found a new lease of life in this avatar, which would undoubtedly find a place on the desk of our members and be of utility whenever they wish to correlate a patient's clinical manifestation with that which has been documented in the past in similar types of skin.
The fact that the team which was involved in the conception and creation of the online platform is also involved in this version would enable some of the thought processes in that concept to be dovetailed into the copy that has been painstakingly prepared after collecting images from the major teaching institutions of the country.
It needs to be emphasized that this atlas is not intended to be a replacement of texts on the subject as it does not contain descriptions. What it is intended to be is to give the reader a ready-made collection of photographs of common and uncommon entities that have been diagnosed with reasonable degree of certainty clinically and/or with the aid of standard diagnostic modalities available. This would be beneficial to residents, young dermatologists trained in parts of the country where a particular condition may not be common enough for an image to be created in the mind when faced with a patient, as well as practicing dermatologists who may wish to review uncommon clinical entities.
This compilation is part of the IADVL Academy's efforts this year at releasing publications to further whet the clinical and academic appetite of our members. We wish that it achieves the purpose for which it was conceived and our members further enhance the value they deliver to their clientele as a result of being well versed with typical clinical features of various disorders relevant to conditions occurring in our skin types.

18Preface
The IADVL Color Atlas of Dermatology is a project very close to IADVL's heart. It aims to familiarize dermatology residents and dermatologists with the various dermatological disorders in a visual manner. It comprises of purely Indian images and therefore will give the best possible outlook of Indian dermatology to a global audience. In addition, undergraduates and specialists of specialities other than dermatology will be able to diagnose common dermatological disorders with the visual aid of these images.
The atlas has high resolution images of dermatological disorders with attractive legends. Common dermatological disorders, interesting and rare variants of these common disorders and rare disorders, especially seen in the Indian subcontinent, have formed the content of this atlas. Also, with no text except for the legends, the atlas entirely looks to form an impression with its images and that is the highlight of the project.
Section editors of different sections were responsible for getting images of their section from various sources. All the premier medical colleges of the country were primary contributors. Experts in specific fields were contacted for images of certain specific disorders. Thus, the list of contributors includes collections of authorities from teaching institutes and practising dermatologists spanning the breadth of the country. The format is to have a logical flow of images based on common appearances, morphological variants, different sites of distribution and rare presentations.
The IADVL Color Atlas of Dermatology aims to be a benchmark production for visualization of dermatological disorders. Good image quality, seamless flow of thought with the sequence of photographs, minimal text and a wide range of manifestations of a particular skin condition are its unique selling propositions (USPs).
All IADVL members who have contributed to the atlas have been duly acknowledged. The atlas has 19 sections with 47 chapters with contributions by individual section editors, chapter authors and a large number of dermatologists who have contributed images to not one, but many chapters. We hope the sincere efforts of the entire editorial team will live up to the expectations of all concerned.
