President
IADVL
Our association IADVL has been expanding its role in publications. Hither to only two textbooks—one for undergraduates and the other for postgraduates were published. Now, this year, we are publishing three books—Recent Advances in Dermatology and Atlases on Dermatology and Dermatopathology. These are published under the aegis of the IADVL Academy and this marks an enhancement of the profile of IADVL Academy.
Recent Advances in Dermatology is the brain child of IADVL Academy, in particular Dr Imran Majid. Hence, it is fitting that he is the Editor-in-Chief of the book. The book seeks to look at recent high-quality publications in different areas of dermatology and provide an analysis of these. Since the emphasis is on publications of last 2 to 3 years, it will help our members keep abreast with the progress in dermatology.
I compliment the immediate past president, Dr Deepak Parikh, for staying this project, academy chair Dr Manas Chatterjee, convener Ameet Valia and all the academy members for executing this project. My appreciation goes to the editor, all authors and reviewers of the chapters for completing this task on time. Presynaptic it had been a matter of satisfaction that this project approved in our AGBM in February 2015 is being completed from start to finish in one year. This is a tribute to the efficiency of our members.12

Dear Friends,
Yet another book!
I know you all may be wondering why one more book?
Friends, textbook project is a long drawn out process, from the time authors submit their chapters and book gets published may even take two years. Science is rapidly progressing, changing and evolving subject. Many things get altered by the time textbook gets published. Thus, there is a need to bridge the knowledge gap between two editions of textbook. Recent Advances in Dermatology is one such means. The idea to start “Recent Advances” was muted during my tenure as President in ACAD group. Dr Imran was very keen and who else can be better than him to edit first inaugural volume?
I congratulate him for untiring work he undertook to compile this edition in a very short time. I also thank all the authors who agreed and sent their chapters within specified time limit.
I hope it will be well received by our members.
Happy reading14

Convener and Chairman designate
IADVL Academy
It is indeed a matter of pride for the IADVL and consequently, the IADVL Academy, that a proposal from a member of the Academy has fructified in a successful completion of an IADVL Academy project under the direction of Dr Deepak Parikh, under whose Presidency, this text was conceived.
This text consists of chapters from Academy members in addition to various Special Interest Groups in the main, something that has been a unique aspect of this endeavor. Subjects and focus areas have been chosen in such as way as to be of relevance to Dermatologists in India and neighboring countries. This would make this text a ready reckoner for those busy practitioners who do not find the time to leaf through several journal articles throughout the year to glean the few important practice points which may be useful for their day-to-day use.
It has been endeavored that publications and landmark work over the past couple of years only are highlighted so as to keep the total reading volume limited as it is expected that details of previous publications would be available in standard textbooks.
It is reiterated that this treatise is not designed to replace standard texts or guidelines as complete details of conditions are not expected to be present herein. It is hence meant as a supplement to material provided in the same with the sole aim at assisting our members and helping in reducing time spent on browsing journals and websites to look at the recent advances when faced with clinical situations on a daily basis.
This compilation is part of the IADVL Academy's efforts this year at releasing publications to further whet the clinical and academic appetite of our members. We wish that it achieves the purpose for which it was conceived and our members further enhance the value they deliver to their clientele as a result of being updated on what is happening worldwide in basic and clinical research that are relevant to conditions occurring on our skin types.16
17Preface
The concept of a ‘Recent Advances book’ was mooted while I was a member of the IADVL Academy of Dermatology at the start of the year 2014. The idea was to compile every major advance/research work clinically relevant to a practicing dermatologist in India. There are year-books in Dermatology that are published every year but the compilation of articles in these year-books is much more relevant to a dermatologist working in the West than the one who practices the specialty in India or South Asia. With this in mind, we started discussing the idea of a book that will cater to the needs of a busy practising dermatologist in India or South Asia. I was given the responsibility of giving this idea a practical shape, the book in your hands is what was shaped up over the last 12 months. I take this opportunity to thank the President IADVL Dr Venkataram Mysore; Chairman IADVL Academy Dr Manas Chatterjee; and Convener IADVL Academy Dr Ameet Valia, for the encouragement and support that they offered during these 12 months.
While compiling the book many formats were in my mind including that of a year-book; but, finally, I decided to go with the present format which combines the content of a year-book with the ‘flow’ of a textbook. I sincerely hope that dermatologists in India and abroad and even people from other specialties find this book interesting and beneficial for their daily medical practice.
The authors for this book have been chosen from different Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and the Conveners of SIGs were given the responsibility of choosing the authors in their respective fields. Members of IADVL Academy were also chosen as authors in those subspecialties which did not have a dedicated SIG. All the authors have put in their best efforts and I sincerely thank each one of them as well as individual SIG Conveners.
The topics for each section of the book have been chosen keeping in mind two basic things—one, the practical relevance of that topic, and two, whether any major advance has been made in that topic. So the reader may find certain topics missing in individual sections which is only because that disease or that topic did not qualify as far as the above-mentioned criteria are concerned.
Wishing all the readers a ‘HAPPY and SATISFIED reading’.
Imran Majid
