7FOREWORD
Most aspiring ENT teacher, surgeon and academician on preparing a book dealing for clinical cases by developing his own approaches is praise worthy. This book is written in a practical manner concise with questions and answers of problems at every step of the disease process without compromising the coverage of the subject. The book, Clinical Cases in Otolaryngology is simple, lucid and an easily understandable for undergraduates, postgraduates and general practitioners. Dr Nirmal Kumar Soni has made all possible efforts to give clinical pictures of all routinely encountered cases in ENT practice. I wish him all the best for this book which will become a major footing stone in ENT literature and probably best used as a basis for practical approach to clinical ENT case study.

9PREFACE
The spectrum of otorhinolaryngology and head and neck surgery is rapidly and vastly expending with the introduction of recent minimal invasive and noninvasive diagnostic and consequent therapeutic advancement.
As a result there is rapid expansion of descriptive aspect of the various disorders of the ENT region. There are numerous books on ENT and head & neck surgery which cover almost all the theoretical aspects of the subject but these texts do not solve all the problems which arise during clinical case study, in practical approach to diagnosis and subsequent management aspect of the disease.
During my 40 years journey through my teaching experience of ENT and head & neck surgery to undergraduates and postgraduates, I came across the problem faced by the students who are keen to learn the subject in easy and simple manner. To get this practical clinical knowledge for case study, the students have to plod through several books within a short span of time and consequently, they fail to assimilate the subject satisfactorily.
Due to this problem of the students, learning physicians and my experience with the ever-rising problems, I was prompted to write the present book. This endure would assist its readers in finding a perspective not always easily available from the standard textbooks.
Now the field of ENT and head & neck surgery being inconceivably vast, “what to study?” “how to study” and “how to face the problem” of the clinical cases during examination and also during day-to-day practice is a problem faced by the students and clinicians. This book will serve a good solution by providing easy answer to these perplexing questions, so that the reader can readily grasp the subject which is very useful in qualifying examination as well as in their practical field of training.
The clinical case presentation, etiopathology, salient features, relevant investigative procedures, differential diagnosis and principle of treatment of surgical problems of the different ENT cases have been lucidly and thoroughly discussed.
To make the book useful, easily understandable and graspable, I have tried to put clinical pictures of almost all cases which were available in my collection of clinical practice of about 40 years.
Despite best efforts, some errors might have crept in, constrictive criticism and valuable suggestions for improvement of book will be most welcome.
I tried my best to utilize the academic experience of publishing about 200 research papers on ENT subjects in various international and national reputed journals, in preparation of the matter in the present book with the aim that it will be useful as clinical aid to students in cultivation of the art of clinical diagnosis.
Nirmal Kumar Soni
