Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to focus on the transthoracic needle biopsy. Transthoracic needle biopsy (TNB) is a minimally invasive technique for establishing diagnosis in many intrathoracic diseases, and constitutes a valid alternative to more invasive surgical procedures. Various aspects of TNB of pulmonary, mediastinal and pleural lesions have been discussed. This chapter covers the indications and contraindications of transthoracic needle biopsy, biopsy planning, needle types, prebiopsy preparation and general biopsy technique, biopsy technique for pulmonary, mediastinal, and pleural lesions, postprocedural precautions and possible complications. Broadly there are two types of needles used for TNB such as aspiration and cutting needles. Complications are usually related to transgression of lung, pleura or a vascular structure. Pneumothorax, alveolar hemorrhage, hemothorax and chest wall hematoma are the most common complications.
