5Dedication
This learning tool is dedicated to the house-staff in pathology to help them succeed in caring for their patients.6
7Preface
This book is designed to be a study tool for trainees in pathology to exercise and gauge their knowledge about the pathology of tumors and tumor-like conditions occurring in the musculoskeletal system and somatic soft tissues. Trainees in orthopedic surgery and musculoskeletal radiology may also find it useful.
We aim to provide a series of challenges to test the reader and stimulate further learning and expertise in what is seen by many as a challenging diagnostic terrain. This book is not, therefore, a systematic presentation of entities, their features, and differential diagnosis. There are already in print excellent sections on soft tissue and bone pathology in general surgical pathology texts, as well as a number of specialized treatises, where trainees can find comprehensive and systematic sources of such information.
As a consequence of our major aim, we present the material under a series of differential diagnostic scenarios that should stimulate the reader to follow or create diagnostic algorithms based on the information contained in the major textbooks and their personal experience. Many of the required responses to the questions do not consist simply of ‘what it is’, but require epidemiological clinical knowledge and an awareness of molecular descriptors of the disease, because the molecular diagnostic field promises ultimate precision in the diagnosis of many entities.
The pictures presented should be regarded as prompts only, as it would be unrealistic to make an accurate diagnostic interpretation from a single field. Limitations in scope have forced a selection and sampling of entities that is far from exhaustive. Completeness has been sacrificed to the reiteration of some entities that we believe merit emphasis. We also chose to be brief, encouraging the reader to work through the book more than once, as repetition is important for learning.
The case selections and any errors in this book are the sole responsibility of the authors.

Acknowledgements
9We are indebted to our Yale Sarcoma Program colleagues that make the delivery of high-quality care to patients with lesions of the musculoskeletal system possible. We are also grateful for the support and help from the technical staff and the graphics unit of the Department of Pathology at the Yale University School of Medicine and Yale-New Haven Hospital, Connecticut, USA. This book would not have been possible without the thorough editing and proofreading by the editorial staff of Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd. Lastly, we would like to thank our colleagues, who characterized and studied these lesions initially, and whose work fills these pages. Their contributions have and will continue to improve the diagnostic accuracy of the pathologists.
We would like to thank Mr Jitendar P Vij (Group Chairman), Mr Ankit Vij (Group President), Ms Chetna Malhotra Vohra (Associate Director), Mr Umar Rashid (Development Editor), and the production team of Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd, New Delhi, India.10
