In this volume of Recent Advances in Surgery—38, we have included topics in which there have been recent major changes or important developments of general interest. Each subject provides an up-to-date review designed to be of value primarily to surgeons taking professional examinations in General Surgery and established Consultants wishing to be kept up-to-date. We also hope that the issues covered will be of practical interest to all surgeons, clinicians and students wishing to keep abreast of changes within the broad field of General Surgery.
The general themes include a review of midline closure of the abdominal wall, assessing outcomes following surgery and an update on laparoscopy in emergency surgery. Concepts relating to gastrointestinal surgery include advances in bariatric surgery, endoscopic resection of gastroesophageal lesions and advances in rectal surgery. In surgical oncology specialist topics include the emerging field of magnetic guidance in cancer surgery, an update on the management of thyroid nodules and on salivary gland tumors. In breast surgery developments in immediate implant reconstruction with acellular dermal matrix and advances in benign breast disease. Other specialist topics include an update on screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm. The volume concludes with a review of recent randomized controlled trials in surgery.
We hope readers agree that this volume maintains the high standards of previous editions. We are most grateful to all our contributors for taking the time to provide comprehensive reviews of each topic.
