67Foreword
It is a pleasure to write the foreword for Textbook of Focused Neurosurgery by Or Cohen-Inbar, MD PhD. This book is designed by the author to be a comprehensive introduction to neurosurgery. The author's broad training in both basic science and neurosurgery provides him with unique background and insights to coherently present the vast expanse of basic and clinical knowledge necessary for the practice of neurosurgery in the 21st century.
There are twenty-eight chapters covering fundamental and patient-related information. I am confident that students and residents at all levels will find this book to be a highly useful source of information. The text may also provide vital facts about patient care to practicing neurosurgeons.
The first portion of the book consists of an overview of relevant surgical and vascular anatomy, and neurophysiology. Acquisition of this knowledge is the fundamental keystone for the rational practice of clinical neurosurgery. Early chapters then focus on neurology including altered states of consciousness, neuro-ophthalmology, neuro-otology and neuro-urology. Information on cortical malformation provides the foundation of a subsequent chapter on pediatric neurosurgery. The neuroradiology chapter covers various techniques vital to the practice of neurosurgery. Subsequent chapters then deal with the breadth of neurosurgical diseases such as hydrocephalus, central nervous system infections, diagnosis of epilepsy, functional disorders, cranial tumors and vascular diseases. Trauma and traumatic injuries of the spine and their treatment also are covered in separate chapters.
In summary, this is a super book which I strongly recommend to all “students” of neurosurgery whether they are about to enter a residency, in the midst of training or in practice.

89Preface
The Textbook of Focused Neurosurgery fulfills a unique role by combining the need for details and comprehensive information about pathophysiological processes, neuroanatomical landmarks and neurosurgical procedures with the limited amount of available time allocated for studies in modern-day residents and clinicians’ life. The need for a clear concise and deductive treatment approaches and algorithms is met as well. This book reflects the labor of a 7 years residency in neurosurgery. Our profession presents a delicate balance of traditional classical knowledge, theories and approaches, which should be known and studied by current-day neurosurgical residents and current literature describing evidence-based medicine, molecular, conceptual and device-related advances. I present a focused classical and up-to-date neurosurgical general overview for the inquisitive medical students, residents and senior neurosurgeons.

Neurosurgery knowledge and skills, perhaps more than any other surgical field, is not acquired solely by textbook and literature knowledge. Rather, it heavily relies on apprentice training and mentor guidance. Mentoring puts essence, content and emphasis on academic learning and facts.
As such, it is appropriate at this point to recognize and honor my mentors at the Department of Neurosurgery at Rambam Health Care Campus, Haifa, Israel.
