Knowledge in medical science and technology has been exponentially increasing, and the students of laboratory science have to keep pace with these advancements in both scientific content as well as the newer methods of learning. The fourth revised edition of Practical Pathology (earlier called Pathology Practical Book) incorporates these newer aspects of knowledge and methods of learning practical pathology. However, while revising the book, well-accepted basic style of the book as exercise-based learning similar to teaching and learning in a practical class of pathology has been retained. The emphasis throughout the revised edition has been on effortless and focused learning by the students on practical points in various sections of pathology, and simultaneously preparing them for viva voce in diagnostic pathology such as on slides, specimens, instruments, normal values, similes, etc. Thus, the revised edition in a small package encompasses abundant practical knowledge of immense value, and also includes useful information for self-assessment.

Highlights of the revised edition are as under:

Updated contents The revised edition having 61 exercises is divided into 8 sections, patterned on the format of practical class of students. These are: Techniques in Pathology (Exercise 1–5), General Pathology (Exercise 6–20), Systemic Pathology (Exercise 21–38), Cytopathology (Exercise 39–41), Haematology and Lymphoid Tissues (Exercise 42–55), Clinical Pathology (Exercise 56–59), Autopsy Pathology (Exercise 60–61) and Appendices (I–III: Common Instruments in Pathology, Common Similes in Pathology, and Normal Values). All these exercises have been updated in their textual contents by adding newer images at several places while redundant information and older images have been deleted.

Key questions for viva voce Besides content of practical knowledge in exercises, the revised edition has a strong newer component of learning by self-assessment. At the end of each exercise, a few key questions based on that exercise have been added along with brief answers to prepare the student for facing viva voce confidently. In my experience, these are the questions which the students are often asked in their examination, in ward rounds or in clinics. Thus, the present edition of Practical Pathology constitutes a single integrated resource of learning, training and self-test.
