Fixed Partial Denture—An Insight
It gives me immense pleasure to see one of my brightest and earliest students—the author of this book Dr Lovely M, taking fixed prosthodontics subject to its next level. Today's students are flooded with information about the subject from several sources—Internet, journals and international books. Such available information is raw and has not been prepared for a young student. Dr Lovely M has handled with ease the responsibility of processing and moderating the concept, facts and the subject of the prosthodontics. Exam Preparatory Manual for Undergraduates: Fixed Partial Dentures is the revised version of its mother edition—Review of Fixed Partial Dentures.
The success of initial book, which was extremely well received by an increasing readership, speaks for the realization for their dreams and adapting to the perceived needs of those facing entrance and postgraduate examinations. I am in receipt of positive reviews of the initial review book and many messages from grateful readers who found the book very useful for the preparation of the examinations, many of them being my own students.
The current dental educational system demands and assesses the ability of knowledge in students using short notes and essay format. Given the vast information available in text and reference books, an average student finds it difficult to prioritize the scheme for answering. Dr Lovely M's current effort would lend a helping hand to prioritize information from the examination point of view. The current authors in unison have made all attempts to retain the strengths of previous print of the review book while making all sincere attempts to include all advancement in the field of FPD and implantology. The basic format of the book, being examination oriented would help the students to face the examination confidently. The inclusion of multiple choice questions (MCQs) and recent advances along with references is an added bonanza for students to keep themselves updated.
Undoubtedly, this book will be a good stepping stone for the beginners to understand this subject and will evoke more interest in reading further reference books. The book has been designed to contemporary syllabus of various Indian Universities and Dental Council of India, which is an added advantage. I am glad to introduce the Exam Preparatory Manual for Undergraduates: Fixed Partial Dentures, 1st edition, to the prosthodontic fraternity and I am sure this book will prove to be useful not only for undergraduates and postgraduates but also for practicing dentists.
I wish Dr Lovely M and all her co-authors, all success in this current and all their future endeavors.

I am grateful for the support of my dear colleagues and students who gave me valuable input in terms of the shortcomings in the first volume. Hence, in this manual, great care was taken to cover the left out questions and also a section on implant dentistry, newer techniques in fixed partial dentures and recent advances with references is added. Responding to many requests from students, a section on MCQ is added. The manual includes answers to the oldest and latest questions that could be asked in the final university question paper.
As requested by the postgraduates, the present manual has included references wherever required, an implant section and recent advances in fixed prosthesis topics have been added.
I am extremely grateful to the contributors for their academic contribution to the implant section, added essays and short notes, MCQ, and recent advances. This book as stated earlier is meant to be a revision tool and not to be considered as a textbook. I am especially indebted to my dear husband Dr Biji Thomas George, for his encouragement and timely support.
I am highly indebted to my teacher Professor K Chandrasekharan Nair, Head, Department of Prosthodontics, Maruthi Dental College, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India, and Professor Fazil Ghani, Head, Department of Prosthodontics, Khyber College of Dentistry, Peshawar, Pakistan, for their insight and constructive comments regarding the contents. Professor Ghani was kind enough to review the entire series of the review books and gave me constructive ideas on how to make it more resourceful. I am indebted to Professor Dr NS Azhagarasan, Vice-Principal and Head, Department of Prosthodontics, Ragas Dental College and Hospital, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, for going through the contents and giving valuable suggestions.
Finally, I owe my sincere gratitude to Shri Jitendar P Vij (Group Chairman), Mr Ankit Vij (Group President), Mr Tarun Duneja (Director–Publishing) and other members of M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd, New Delhi, India, for making the contents more reader friendly. I am hoping that the changes made in this print will be more beneficial for the student fraternity and the entire dental faculty in all aspects.
