Diabetes mellitus has become an important clinical and public health problem in our country. Its increasing prevalence is posing a huge challenge to the medical fraternity, particularly those who are involved in the management of these patients. Also, a lot of research is being carried out in the area of diabetes all over the world and it is becoming difficult to keep pace with the newer development that are emerging every day.
Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) has been engaged in activities that empower primary care physicians in different aspects of diabetes mellitus so that they can manage these patients effectively and confidently. The RSSDI annual scientific meetings held every year are occasions for updating one's knowledge and sharing of clinical experiences with one another and with leading experts in the field of diabetes. Since last year, we have also decided to bring out an RSSDI Diabetes Update book every year which contains manuscripts of most of the lectures and presentations given at the annual scientific meetings. The current edition of RSSDI Diabetes Update is based on the scientific program of the 44th Annual Scientific Meeting held from 18–20th November, 2016, at Hyderabad. It has contributions from some of the leading experts in the field of diabetology and endocrinology from India and abroad. It has been our endeavor to cover all the recent advances and current concepts in the pathogenesis and management of diabetes mellitus so that the readers are fully abreast of all the newer development in this field. It also focuses on some of the important yet unrecognized clinical issues that we face in our day to day practice. I am sure the diabetes update would prove to be a very useful resource which can be used as an important reference by all those who are involved in the care of diabetes patients. It will be particularly useful for the postgraduate students, fellows, and residents.
I am thankful to all the authors who have given their valuable time in writing the manuscript and interacting with the publishing team to edit and upgrade their chapters so as to make them highly academic in content. I would also express my sincere thanks to our publishers M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd., New Delhi, particularly Dr Neeraj Choudhary and his team Ms Barkha Arora, Ms Neha Bhatia, and others for all their efforts in editing and publishing the update book in time.
