Congestive heart failure (CHF) or heart failure is a complex multisystem disorder resulting from cardiac conditions. It is a form of chronic heart failure in which ventricle is no longer able to eject the blood. Congestive heart failure is a condition in which the heart’s function as a pump is inadequate to meet the body’s need. It is the inability of the heart to provide sufficient pump action to distribute blood flow to meet the needs of the body. This chapter covers the incidence, etiology and risk factor, pathophysiology, types of heart failure, clinical manifestations, diagnostic evaluation, complications, management, nursing management/interventions, and patient education. Client with acute heart failure is usually admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) for continuous monitoring. The critical step in the management of heart failure is early identification and management. The interventions are focused to improve ventricular pump performance and reduce myocardial workload.
