fm7Foreword
History is a Greek word, which literally means just ‘investigation’, said the great British historian Arnold J Toynbee. Hence, it is not surprising that researchers often rely on historical approach to base their findings. Looking into the past to understand the present and to predict the future, is the essence of this method. In medical practice, we are often compelled to consult the patient's case history to draw conclusions and arrive at a diagnosis.
Handbook for History Taking and Clinical Examination in Children by Dr ML Kulkarni takes this approach to glorious new heights. The rather plain title of the book might mislead the layman into thinking this is a book about history and children's education. But what this work actually does is to give the medical man a reliable and meticulous 360° view of child health as can be interpreted from patient history alone. It is amazing that such wealth of vital information can be gleaned from just making a few observations from the patient's past.
Through writing this book, Dr ML Kulkarni has given a new depth to the historical narrative. Just reading the book once and keeping it within reach, can have an empowering effect on the clinician. Dr ML Kulkarni is, by far, one of the most prolific writers among pediatricians, and this new book is a worthy addition to the repertoire of titles he has already authored.
For Dr ML Kulkarni, his writing career is merely an extension of the classroom. A teacher throughout his life, he retired as the Head of the Department of Pediatrics at JJ Medical College, Davangere, Karnataka, India in 2011. He is an acknowledged expert and a pioneer in treating pediatric metabolic disorders. On the campus, he was a legendary figure, and the students would look upon him with awe. I have myself been witness to his rare ability to mesmerize students with his bedside talk and the raw passion it brought to the fore. In 1994, at the age of 47, he became the youngest recipient of the prestigious’ Dr BC Roy Award, for his contributions as a medical educator.fm8
Talents like him are rare in our field and his creative output has enriched our profession immensely. I wish to congratulate Dr ML Kulkarni on the concept and high quality of this book and I hope he will continue to write with the same relish in the future.

fm9Preface
Rapid advances have been made in technologies in biological sciences. Clinical medicine still remains the cornerstone for proper approach to the medical problems. Handbook for History Taking and Clinical Examination in Children is an attempt to introduce the clinical pediatrics to fresh medical students, who often find it difficult to deal with children.
A thorough history and good observation (intellectual, comprehensive and gentle!) form the foundation for good clinical approach.
This book outlines only the clinical approach, and the readers may further develop their knowledge and information by referring to the detailed textbook ‘Clinical Methods in Pediatrics’ (3 Volumes), authored by me, and published by Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers.
ML Kulkarni
