Preface to the Fifth Edition

A nursing dictionary is an effective tool of providing not only meaning of commonly used medical terms but also about procedures, investigations and pharmacological agents in brief.

The complete and concise text of the latest edition is fully revised and updated with more than 200 new entries. Around 70 new figures explaining procedures, investigations and pharmacological agents in brief have also been added.

New appendices, including common nursing errors, Indian nursing implications, first aid, nursing ethics, immunization and vaccination, patient safety, etc. would be of immense help to nursing students and medical professionals. The dictionary would definitely serve as a ready reference to the entire nursing community.

Book making is an extensive work and requires contributions from several individuals. I would especially like to appreciate the extensive work of content updation done by Dr Monisha Batra and whole of the content team (Dr Kanav Midha, Priyanka Diwan, Shallu Mann and Mampi Debnath) in supporting her. All their efforts have helped in providing us with an updated version of the dictionary.

Preface to the First Edition

Nursing is a speciality in its own right. Implementation of any health program at community or hospital level needs active participation of nursing staff. Hence, nursing education has received a major thrust in recent times.

Medical vocabulary useful for nurses is expanding at a rapid pace. Old and obsolete words are being deleted. New procedures and investigations are being added regularly. A nursing dictionary is an effective tool of providing not only meaning of commonly-used medical terms but also about procedures, investigations and pharmacological agents in brief.

In this book, I have compiled and presented the commonly-used terms and their meaning without any emphasis on their pronunciation and etymon. I hope the width and depth of its coverage will be advantageous for the nursing community.

All suggestions for improvement are cordially welcome.
