Contributors Preface
Somewhere around 3 years back, I was approached by M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd, New Delhi, India to edit a book on Cosmetic Injectables-Dermal Fillers and Botulinum toxin, which should be useful for the Asian readers as well as the rest of the world. Honestly, this was not really in my comfort zone, but I am always in for new adventures. I spoke to three more co-editors, those who are successful injectors to help me in this venture. However, life is unpredictable and two of them dropped out along the way. Dr Vivek Nair, my younger colleague and student, remained on board, and we decided to take this ahead, in spite of the odds.
A lot happened in these 2–3 years in our lives. I could feel once again that I was at professional crossroads and would perhaps have to take uncomfortable decisions. I lost my dear mother who was my strength, a wonderful professional colleague and good friend. The editorial team also changed thrice! And wanting to be true to the subject, I started learning injectables whenever and wherever I could and I feel I could at least learn some important techniques. And importantly, a dermatologist mostly following medical dermatology can also learn. It was our mission to make an easily comprehensible book on botulinum toxin and fillers available to practitioners and dermatology students, so they inject properly and safely.
I would like to thank our authors, national and international, for writing wonderful chapters and providing expert tips. A big word of thanks to Vivek Nair for his patience and expertise on this book. And thank you, Dr Gillian Ruth Britto for helping us as an Assistant Editor and Dr Latika Arya for giving us valuable insights into this project and helping us with the table of contents.
I would like to thank Shri Jitendar P Vij (Group Chairman), Mr Ankit Vij (Managing Director), Ms Chetna Malhotra Vohra (Associate Director–Content Strategy), Dr Rajul Jain (Development Editor) and the staff of M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd, New Delhi, India, in helping me out with this difficult project. Thanks Srikanta and Abhik for being understanding. And to the readers, happy reading and safe injecting!
Rashmi Sarkar
Preface
When I started injecting in 2010 there were very few of us actively practicing cosmetic dermatology. Since then the numbers of dermatologists interested in injectables have grown in leaps and bounds. It is heartening to see that most injectors today have sound knowledge of the fundamentals around the use of fillers and botulinum toxin; quite unlike the situation when we started. This book fulfills the need of a handy reference tool for injecting different areas of the face. Expert injectors from all over the country have given their valuable personal experience for the most common indications treated. Under Dr Rashmi Sarkar's guidance, editing this book has been a learning experience for me, and we hope that the readers will find it useful. I would like to thank her for giving me this opportunity and for helping to keep me connected with academia despite being in private practice for over a decade. The love and support of my family is the bedrock which makes all else possible.
Vivek Nair
