FOREWORD
UR Dhanalakshmi MD DD DNB
Former Professor and Head
Department of Dermatology

It is a privilege to write the foreword for the book edited by Professor Jayakar Thomas. I have listened to numerous orations and talks delivered by him as well as gone through a lot of his books, chapters in books and articles.
In medicine, it is important to diagnose and treat common conditions more effectively rather than concentrating on rare disorders since the bulk of our patients fall into the former category.
Dermatophytoses are one of the commonest conditions encountered in clinical practice and it is also one of the most psychologically crippling disorders. The social and psychological aspects of acne are very important notably because it affects individuals during adolescence when personality development takes place. Above all, the scourge today is the development of drug resistance, added on by the indiscriminate use of topical steroids.
Therefore it is important to hit dermatophytoses early and hit it hard. It is also important to rule out various conditions associated with dermatophytoses.
Color Atlas of Dermatophytoses: Focus on Superficial Fungal Infections cover every aspect of this group of diseases and should be read by every dermatologist since the bulk of patients coming to a dermatologist have this problem. The images and legends are especially informative and help in easy understanding.
I congratulate the co-editor Dr Parimalam Kumar for working alongside Dr Jayakar Thomas in compiling this book. I also convey my best wishes to them in coming up with similar work in the future.

“Knowledge, if not shared is of no use at all”
Dermatophytoses are amongst one of the most common skin condition worldwide. Despite this fact, accurate information about this condition is scarce.
This book, Color Atlas of Dermatophytoses: Focus on Superficial Fungal Infections, is designed as an academic project with the target readers as both postgraduate students and practicing dermatologist. All chapters encompass glimpses of existing knowledge in the light of recent advances in the segment of fungal diseases and the comorbidities. We are duty-bound to thank our residents Dr Sivaramakrishnan Sangaiah and Dr Shreya Srinivasan who helped us capture some of the photographs.
We hope this book is a helpful tool, not only for the student who needs an expert source of basic knowledge in the different forms of dermatophytoses, but also for the pressured practitioner who needs a clear, concise, and balanced distillation of the best information on which to base daily clinical decisions.
At times, the science presented might seem overwhelming to the reader. But one can start reading from any chapter, based on one's interests, tastes, and preferences.
