[(True/complete) knowledge gives discipline, from discipline comes worthiness, from worthiness one gets wealth, from wealth (one does) good deeds, from that (comes) joy]
It is a joyous occasion for our team from the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain, at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. This year's workshop plus CME, the famed Tutorials in Hemodynamic Monitoring and Therapy in Critical Care (THEMATICC 2019), is 15th in the series of CMEs, we have held annually starting in 2005. As such, this seemed an appropriate occasion to bring out the Textbook of Hemodynamic Monitoring and Therapy in the Critically Ill. The Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain, at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, has a strong tradition of publishing books which are of great use, in particular to the students of the subject; and the experienced practitioners in general, as well. The previous books, Objective Anesthesia Review published for the Anesthesiology postgraduate students, which is in the 4th edition (and we are about to come out with the 5th edition soon), and Case-based Review in Critical Care Medicine for the students of Critical Care Medicine, have proved to be immensely popular.
We hope that the current book Textbook of Hemodynamic Monitoring and Therapy in the Critically Ill will prove to be equally successful. It will be useful to all for understanding the intricacies of the bewildering array of monitors available today. We also hope that it will make their task of managing critically ill patients suffering from complex illnesses easier, and will improve their patient outcomes.
The topics in this book have been authored by experts in their own field of monitoring, from India and abroad. We hope their experience and application of their knowledge in writing these chapters will lend an authentic aura to the discussion.
Finally the core ICU team from the department has poured their sweat and blood in the making of this book, we would like to believe that the effort proves its worth, by pleasing the only critics that matter to us, you, the readers.
We wish you a pleasant reading.
