The world has seen a tremendous technology-driven change in the last couple of decades. Many things that were expensive and affordable only to the wealthiest people are now within reach of the common man. The Internet, Mobile Phones and Tablets have reduced the recurring cost of communication nearly to zero. Ready access to knowledge is no longer the privilege of the few. Today, anybody has immediate ready access to the knowledge online which would have taken us hours to find a few decades back. Also, the knowledge from across the globe is accessible right from the first day to one and all, irrespective of the distance or amount of knowledge involved. Such is the impact of technology.
Technology is not without its own limitations though. One of the major ones being an explosion of knowledge which may be difficult to understand. In such a scenario, we must stick to the Gold standards of authors who keep on giving consistently great books year after year.
Partha's Comprehensive Manual for Pediatric and Adolescent Practice is an excellent book which provides pointwise and essential details of more than 300 topics which are relevant to a practicing pediatrician in a lucid and easy-to-understand format.
It gives me great pleasure to write a Foreword to a book which is edited by Professor A Parthasarathy and Dr Alok Gupta. I have read a couple of their past endeavors together and I can definitely say that there is absolutely no compromise made to the science or the simplicity with which any pediatrician can understand the book.
I am certain that this book will be a great asset to all the practicing pediatricians and would take this opportunity to congratulate them on the herculean task that they have managed together so easily once again. I would like to offer my best wishes to them and urge the practicing pediatricians as well as postgraduate students to go through this manual completely from end-to-end so that you may derive maximum benefits from the hard work put in by Dr Parthasarathy, Dr Alok Gupta and the entire team.
Thank you Partha Sir, for giving me such an honor. May you and your efficient and passionate team continue enriching our lives with your wisdom.
Bakul Jayant Parekh
President 2020

Pediatrics has evolved as a science, and new dimensions have developed in last two decades. Extensive textbooks are available on almost all topics related to child health. Development of pediatrics subspecialties has also fired a plethora of tomes in respective fields. At a given time, there is so much of text available on a topic that the reader is lost in a sea of information. In this context, this book entitled Partha's Comprehensive Manual for Pediatric and Adolescent Practice is an excellent attempt to provide pointwise and essential details of more than 300 topics which are relevant to a practicing pediatrician in an easy-to-read and easy-to-comprehend format. Each chapter gives an overview in a nutshell of the entire gamut of that disorder.
I am extremely happy that Professor Parthasarathy and Dr Alok Gupta are editing this book for the benefit of practitioners dealing with pediatric and adolescent patients. So far, they have published six books between 2014 and 2019 all of which have sold like hot cakes. I congratulate the authors for this new publication and wish them good luck and hope that this work proves to be of immense benefit to the practicing pediatricians, postgraduate students and learned faculty and specialists in the field.

_FM_19Foreword
Indeed, it is a proud privilege for me to write “foreword” for Partha's Comprehensive Manual for Pediatric and Adolescent Practice which is edited jointly by Professor Parthasarathy, Dr Alok Gupta, Dr Anupama S Borker, Dr Dhanya Dharmapalan and Dr Remesh Kumar R.
The medical science is ever expanding and in era of consumerism, Google learned patients and cut-throat competition, it is imperative for practitioners to get their knowledge updated regularly. It is said that “You learn, while you teach” and so the pediatricians involved with the medical education as teaching faculty have regular opportunities to update their knowledge but not so with practitioners. On many instances due to the busy schedule of practice, the practitioners might have lost the temperament and zeal to read textbooks. For them reading the comprehensive manual will be a more preferred way to update their knowledge than reading textbook or journals. Partha's Comprehensive Manual for Pediatric and Adolescent Practice is an excellent attempt to provide to the point essential details on more than 300 topics which are relevant to a practicing pediatrician in an easy-to- read and easy-to-comprehend format. Each chapter gives an overview in a nutshell of the entire gamut of that disorder.
My heartiest congratulations to Professor A Parthasarathy, Dr Alok Gupta and editorial team as well as contributors for coming out with this ready reckoner for the practitioners. I am sure it will be as popular as the previous six publications of the duo publishing between 2014 and 2019.

Partha's septet!!
Comprehensive Manual is a new baby in the pediatric ward. The DNA of its parents, A Parthasarathy and Alok Gupta compels them to Dedicate a New title Annually to the pediatric fraternity.
The joy of reading has become muted in the current e-ra. You can turn the page with your own hands in a physical copy. You can write your name on the first page of the book, but not on a screen. You do not need to be worried about charging a device to read. You only need to be mentally charged. Ease of access of information gives us an excuse not to memorize important information that we would have committed to memory had it been from a book from the library. Most importantly, you do not have to worry about dropping a book down.
Medical knowledge, like any drug has a half-life. It refers to the time, it takes for the quantity of a substance to reduce itself by half. Today, the half-life of medical knowledge is about 18-24 months. New knowledge will become old. The duo of Partha and Alok is faster in pace. They bring out an up-to-date publication every 12 months!
Many a times we keep procrastinating on our academic difficulties for want of a ready reference. The difficulties keep piling up producing academic stress. I call these difficulties as academic ‘stresslets’. The stresslets go unresolved and put us in a chronic ‘indecision-itis’. At the same time, there is a bombardment of information through hundreds of sources like internet, journals, periodicals. Most of this information does not pertain closely to the patients we see routinely. Hence, we cannot really take any action in response to all this information. The information-action ratio starts going up, to the point where we become ‘infotent’ (informationally impotent). A source of information from an authentic source from experienced veterans is the only cure.
PARTHA is Perennially Active Releasing Titles with High Acclaim. The authors have put their heart and mind to make every chapter a dish that is intensely savoury and nutritious. We will enjoy the meal.
Eyes do not see what mind does not know and mind does not know what the eyes do not read! So start reading the book. It will provide food for your academic satiety, a hood from medical ignorance and will make up your mood for the day-to-day practice.
Start today.

_FM_23Preface
We learn to unlearn, then relearn and thus continue to learn
–Late Professor Gopal Saran, Patna
True to this maxim, Continuing Medical Education (CME) has become the order of the day. That is the reason every professional organization organizes regular CME programs, monthly, in seminars and conferences as a regular feature since the busy practitioner hardly finds time to update his knowledge by referring to ongoing journals and updated textbooks. So, we developed an idea why not we bring out a series of books with updated information from eminent authors quoting latest references.
It is with this objective in mind, we conceived the idea of coming out with Partha's Series of books in pediatric and adolescent practice, viz. Case Scenarios, Frequently Asked Questions, and Management Algorithms in Pediatric and Adolescent Practice, and Investigations and Interpretations in Pediatric and Adolescent Practice.
The seventh book titled Partha's Comprehensive Manual for Pediatric and Adolescent Practice is now in your hands. A formidable team of national and international experts joined hands with us with the sole objective of educating the practicing pediatricians, by sharing the rich experience they gained from their own archives. Being luminaries in their own fields, they share their practical knowledge to benefit the readers purely out of academic interest without expecting any remuneration whatsoever.
This book is presented with 30 Chapters and 2 Appendices covering Newborn to Adolescent Care including several subspecialty disciplines in about 850 pages. The common and not so common practical topics which have come out of the experts’ own rich experience over decades, will be of great use to the practicing pediatricians in managing common and uncommon selected entities with the right diagnosis and the right treatment in their day-to-day practice. We are confident that this book will serve as a desktop reference volume.
We will strive our best to improve the standard of the title in its subsequent editions. Your suggestions are most welcome.
A Parthasarathy
