Daily application of mouth rinses has been recommended for the prevention and control of caries and periodontal disease.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of alcohol-containing and alcohol-free mouth rinses on the microhardness of three restorative materials – resin composite (Filtek Z350XT), light cure glass ionomer cement (Vitremer) and conventional restorative glass ionomer cement (GC Fuji II).

Twenty samples of each restorative material were fabricated and their microhardness values were checked at 100g load and 15 seconds dwell time. Ten samples of each restorative material were stored in alcohol containing mouth rinse (Listerine) and ten samples each were stored in alcohol free mouth rinse (Hiora) for 12 hours. At the end of the test period microhardness was measured with a Vickers microhardness tester.

Alcohol containing mouth rinses reduced the microhardness values of composite and light cure glass ionomer significantly more than alcohol free mouth rinses. Reduction in the microhardness value of conventional restorative glass ionomer cement was similar for both alcohol containing and alcohol free mouth rinses.

Both mouth rinses showed reduction in microhardness values of all three restorative materials, with more reduction caused due to alcohol containing mouth rinses in composite and light cure glass ionomer.

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of developmental dental anomalies and fluorosis in small cohort of Indian school children & teenagers.

A total of 473 school children and teenagers (250 female & 223 male) of 6 - 17 years were examined clinically for developmental anomalies of teeth such as peg lateral, supernumerary teeth (mesiodens), and talon's cusp. Children were also examined for dental fluorosis.

On examination 1.47% of the sample population, had at least one developmental dental anomaly. Prevalence of Peg lateral, Mesiodens, and Talon's cusp was 0.63%, 0.63% and 0.21% respectively while 87.9% showed fluorosis induced enamel hypoplasia.

the most common dental anomalies was Peg lateral and Mesiodens. The present study also emphasizes the need for de-fluoridation of water in the region, because of high incidence of enamel hypoplasia induced by fluorosis in the study group. Other developmental dental anomalies also differed in prevalence from previous reports, pointing to a possible ethnic variation.

Fibrous dysplasia is one of the most perplexing diseases of the fibro-osseous tissue. It is considered as a hamartomatous lesion of the bone and comprises 70% of the fibro osseous lesions. It is a disease of bone maturation and remodeling in which the normal medulla and cortices are replaced by disorganized fibrous woven bone. It is important to distinguish this lesion from other fibro osseous lesions mainly ossifying fibroma.

Pathologists usually confront difficulties in evaluating these fibro osseous lesions sharing similarities and differences with regard to clinical presentation, radiographic observation and microscopic picture. Accurate diagnosis of these lesions is of utmost importance to achieve optimal therapeutic goals.

A case of Fibrous dysplasia of maxilla with clinical, radiographic and routine histopathologic examination, along with special stains and blood chemistry is discussed here.
