Abstract

Aim

To assess the sources, level of awareness, and need for information about dental implants among patients attending the outpatient ward of department of Prosthodontics, Government Dental College and Hospital, Ahmedabad, India.

Materials and methods

A survey was conducted on 300 patients attending the outpatient ward department of prostho- dontics, Government dental college and hospital, Ahmedabad. A printed questionnaire was used to evaluate the awareness about dental implants.

Result

Out of 300 patients only 41.33% had heard about the implant as treatment modality and most of them were of 16 to 30 age group (53.33%). For most of the participants, dentist was the main sources of information about dental implants (69.35%), and most of them were found to have interest to know about implants. 45.33% were willing to go under the treatment if needed, while 52.67% cited high costs as the main reason for refusal of the treatment if needed.

Conclusion

Patient should be informed about implants by conducting and implementing various public awareness camp- aigns, counseling centers should be established in patient outpatient ward in Prosthodontic departments of dental colleges and in private dental clinics. It also concludes that various efforts should be made by the public sector to lower the cost of implants so that they can be made affordable to all who are in need and to improve their oral health.

Caries, Oral Health Knowledge, Behavior, and Barriers to Care Among a Group of Urban Poor in the Philippines: An Overview

[Year:2014] [Month:April-June] [Volume:4] [Number:2] [Pages:7] [Pages No:39 - 45]

DOI: 10.5005/jp-journals-10019-1104  |  Open Access |  How to cite  |

Abstract

Purpose

To provide an overview of the caries status and needs, knowledge, behavior and barriers to oral health in a group of adults from a poor urban community in the Philippines.

Materials and methods

401 subjects aged 16 to 85 years (Mean ± SD: 41.4 ± 15.2) were assessed for caries status and needs, oral mucosal lesions and fluorosis using the 1997 WHO format and interviewed using a structured questionnaire. The examinations were conducted in natural light with a mouth mirror and an explorer with the subject seated in a regular chair. One-way ANOVA was used to compare the means and Chi-square and Fisher's exact test was used to compare the proportions. The significance level was set at ɑ = 0.05.

Results

The mean DMFT for the whole sample was 15.59. Older adults had more missing teeth compared to their younger counterparts (0.73 MT for ≤ 20 years; 22.13 MT for ≥ 71 years) while the number of mean untreated decay was higher among the younger age cohorts with those aged 21 to 30 years of age experiencing the most untreated decay (DT of 9.37). The need for extractions increased with age (1.70; SD 1.92 teeth in 61- 70 year-olds) and the need for multi-surface fillings (6.59, SD 2.86) was greatest among young adults. In general, the oral health knowledge and awareness of the importance of good oral hygiene was high, however, only 33% reported seeing a dentist in the previous 2 years. Over 82% reported their perceived oral health as fair to poor, suggesting that this urban, poor population is aware of their needs, but face financial barriers to acting on this perceived need.

Conclusion

A large percentage of the present sample of Filipino adults had significant unmet caries needs and adequate finances were the main barrier to seeking care at a dental office.

To Compare and Evaluate the Sealing Ability of Root Canal Sealer with and without Triple Antibiotic Paste using Ultraviolet-visible Spectrophotometric Analysis

[Year:2014] [Month:April-June] [Volume:4] [Number:2] [Pages:4] [Pages No:48 - 51]

DOI: 10.5005/jp-journals-10019-1106  |  Open Access |  How to cite  |

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of current study was to compare and eva- luate the sealing ability of root canal sealer with and without triple antibiotic paste.

Materials and methods

Fifty extracted human single rooted teeth were selected and each test group had 25 teeth. The teeth were decoronated and then prepared with protaper rotary files till the no F2 in conjunction with 17% EDTA lubrication and 2 ml of 5.25% sodium hypochlorite irrigation. The teeth in group I were obturated using the zinc oxide sealer mixed with triple antibiotic paste and the teeth in group II were obturated using the zinc oxide sealer alone and then nail varnish was applied leaving the apical 3 mm of root exposed. The apical third was then immersed in 5 ml of 2% methylene blue dye in 15 ml screw capped bottle for 72 hours. The varnish was removed and the teeth were subsequently immersed in 35% nitric acid and kept again for 72 hours in a centrifugal tube. After the teeth were completely dissolved the solution was then filtered with a fine grit filter paper and centrifuged at 2000 rpm for 1 minute. The collected solution was then subjected to spectrophotometric analysis. The data was evaluated statistically by Mann-Whitney U-test.

Results

The results showed significant differences (p < 0.05) between the sealing ability of two groups evaluated.

Conclusion

Present study suggests that addition of triple anti-biotic paste to the sealer increased its sealing ability, reduced the microleakage and also imparts the antimicrobial property to the sealer.
