Socio-Demographic Determinants Of Utilization Of Dental Services Among Secondary School Students

[Year:2015] [Month:May-August] [Volume:9] [Number:2] [Pages:5] [Pages No:55 - 59]

DOI: 10.5005/johcd-9-2-55  |  Open Access |  How to cite  |

Abstract

Objective

This study evaluated the socio demographic determinants of utilization of dental services among secondary school students.

Method

A cross-sectional study of secondary school students attending schools in the immediate vicinity of a tertiary health facility that provides dental services. The analysis was done using frequency distribution, logistic regression, cross tabulations and test of significance with chi square. P< 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Results

A total of 741 students participated in the study with 207 (27.9%) reporting dental visits mainly when they had dental problems. There was statistically significant association between the type of student, class and utilization of oral health services. Logistic regression showed no socio demographic factor was predictive of utilization of oral health services.

Conclusion

Although knowledge of who a dentist is was high, utilization of dental services was poor with no socio demographic factor being a predictor of utilization of dental services.

Abstract

Background

Private dentists’ knowledge and attitude on preventive dentistry may influence their practice and contribute to oral health of individuals and community. The objective of the study was to investigate the preventive orientation of private dental practitioners in Vadodara (India) through a questionnaire study.

A cross-sectional self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted among Indian Dental Association-enrolled private dentists in Vadodara. The 37-item pre-tested questionnaire included questions about personal and professional characteristics and items to assess knowledge, attitude, practice and barriers related to preventive dentistry. Statistical methods included descriptive statistics and chi-square and correlation analysis using Pearson's Correlation coefficient.

Results

82 of 140 eligible respondents filled the questionnaire (response rate: 58.57%). Majority were BDS degree holders (64.63%). Most dentists had solo-practice (65.85%) and had a work experience of 1-10 years (56.10%). 75% reported reading national and/or international dental journals. 62.20% claimed to have attended Continuing Dental Education programmes within the last year and interest was expressed by 89.02%. Majority (80.49%) possessed above average knowledge. Knowledge was higher among least experienced groups compared to the most experienced groups and it was statistically significant. 48.78% of respondents exhibited highly favourable attitude. Frequently rendered preventive measures were oral hygiene instructions, anti-tobacco advice and dietary advices practiced by 86.59%, 80.49% and 43.90% of dentists respectively. Oral cancer screening, fluoride and sealants were done by most dentists on risk basis. Lead protection was ignored by 43.90%. Most dentists perceived patient-related barriers as most impeding to preventive care. No correlation was observed between knowledge and attitude.

Peri-Implantitis In Dental Implants: An Updated Review

[Year:2015] [Month:May-August] [Volume:9] [Number:2] [Pages:4] [Pages No:81 - 84]

DOI: 10.5005/johcd-9-2-81  |  Open Access |  How to cite  |

Abstract

The use of dental implants has revolutionized the treatment of partially and fully edentulous patients today. While in many cases dental implants have been reported to achieve long-term success, these are also not immune from the complicationsincludingperi-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory process which involves bone loss around osseointegrated implant in function. The etiology of the disease has been attributed to bacterial infections, occlusal overload, surgical trauma, faulty or incorrect prosthetic design and/ or improper implant placement. Diagnosis is based on changes in colour of the gingiva, bleeding and probing depth of peri-implant pockets, suppuration, x-ray and gradual loss of bone height around the tooth. Treatment modalities will differ depending upon whether it is a case of periimplantmucositis or periimplantitis, Therapeutic objectives focus on control of infection, detoxification of the implant surface and regeneration of the alveolar bone. This review article gives a brief description of etiopathogenesis, diagnosis and various treatment options in the management of periimplant disease.

Preterm Birth Complications On Oro-Dental Structures: An Updated Review

[Year:2015] [Month:May-August] [Volume:9] [Number:2] [Pages:5] [Pages No:85 - 89]

DOI: 10.5005/johcd-9-2-85  |  Open Access |  How to cite  |

Abstract

Preterm birth is the birth of a baby of less than 37 weeks gestational age. The cause of preterm birth is in many situations elusive and unknown. Premature infants have a short prenatal development period and are at greater risk for short and long term complications, including disabilities and impediments in growth and mental development. The prevalence of oral defects in the deciduous and permanent dentition has been reported to be higher in premature infants. Premature birth can cause enamel defects such as quantitative loss of enamel (hypoplasia), qualitative change in the translucence (opacity) of the enamel, or a combination of both. Other dental defects in preterm babies include notching of the alveolar ridge, palatal grooving, high arched palate, dental crossbite and palatal asymmetry. Moreover, delayed eruption/maturation and developmental defects of both the primary and permanent dentitions have also been reported. With the introduction of intensive medical care including the increased use of antenatal corticosteroids and the recent routine administration of surfactant replacement therapy, survival of prematurely born infants has improved markedly. However, the significant progress has been made in the care of premature infants but not in reducing the prevalence of preterm birth, making the reduction of preterm birth a challenging proposition.

Management of Acquired Bilateral Masseteric Hypertrophy-A Case Report

[Year:2015] [Month:May-August] [Volume:9] [Number:2] [Pages:4] [Pages No:92 - 95]

DOI: 10.5005/johcd-9-2-92  |  Open Access |  How to cite  |

Abstract

Masseter muscle hypertrophy is a rare condition of unknown cause, which is important due to growing cosmetic concern. A hypertrophied masseter may cause prominent mandibular angle, alter facial lines and characteristic square configuration of face, which may be unacceptable to the patient. Several treatment options reported for masseter hypertrophy, which range from conservative treatment options to invasive surgical procedure. The botulinum therapy offers good results but it's expensive and requires repeated injections with the chances of antibodies development. However, surgical treatment though invasive provides quick and permanent treatment for masseter muscle hypertrophy. The present case reports surgical management of young male patient with masseter hypertrophy due to cosmetic reasons.
