Abstract

Stem cells are unique cells, as they have the potential to undergo repair and regeneration into a variety of distinct cell types of the body. These cells are of great importance in today's regenerative medicine and can be isolated from specific tissues of the body including oral cavity. Especially, stem cells obtained from the placenta and umbilical cord that were considered to be biologic waste can be used in the treatment of cancerous conditions also. Moreover, the recent past has plenty of studies carried out in pulpal stem cells from the dental tissues. Hence, the present study was conducted to assess the level of awareness and knowledge about different sources of stem cells and its importance among expectant mothers in rural areas of Puducherry population. Through this study, the knowledge of stem cells will be emphasized among the pregnant women.

[Year:2020] [Month:July-December] [Volume:10] [Number:2] [Pages:4] [Pages No:34 - 37]

DOI: 10.5005/jp-journals-10083-0933  |  Open Access |  How to cite  |

Abstract

Aims and objectives: This study was undertaken to analyze the benefits and drawbacks of the universal back resting device (UBRD) and to use the obtained data to rectify defects if any and modify it for the betterment of treatment outcomes at camp sites. Materials and methods: This is a cross-sectional questionnaire study undertaken among a group of 100 patients and 100 healthcare providers who have received treatment with the aid of and provided treatment with the UBRD, respectively. The data that were obtained by analyzed and percentages were calculated using SPSS 17 for windows. Results: The results of this study conclusively pointed out that the UBRD meets the demands that it was intended for and it can also be used as an alternative to portable dental chairs at camp sites or even in primary health centers when the available funds are insufficient in ratio to the number of people requiring treatment. The possible alteration that can be made to the device to increase its efficiency was also noted. Conclusion: The UBRD has proved to be useful in providing oral healthcare at camp sites and could be stated that it is a fair enough alternative to conventional chairs when minimum resources are available. Clinical significance: The UBRD is a unique device that can aid in providing better treatment and is cost efficient and if it is implemented in camp/outreach sites, it would drastically increase the number of patients getting treated in a short period of time and to an efficiency level almost as equal as a portable dental chair.

An Uncommon and Rare Soft Tissue Tumor of the Cheek (Schwannoma): A Case Report

[Year:2020] [Month:July-December] [Volume:10] [Number:2] [Pages:3] [Pages No:38 - 40]

DOI: 10.5005/jp-journals-10083-0936  |  Open Access |  How to cite  |

Abstract

Schwannoma is usually an uncommon, benign, encapsulated, very slow-growing, usually solitary tumor that originates from Schwann cells of the nerve sheath derived from the neuroectoderm. Only 1% of schwannomas was intraoral of which the most common site is always the tongue after which the palate, floor of the mouth, buccal mucosa, lips, and jaws can be affected. Schwannoma is an uncommon benign tumor that originates from the Schwan cell of the peripheral nerves. It is difficult to diagnose clinically. In our case, the patient reported a solitary swelling present on the left cheek. The swelling was warmth, tender, and consistency is soft. Inflamed buccal mucosa was also noted and the patient had restricted mouth opening. Then, surgical excision was done under general anesthesia.

Management of Oral Submucous Fibrosis with Intralesional Injection of Hyaluronidase and Dexamethasone: A Case Report

[Year:2020] [Month:July-December] [Volume:10] [Number:2] [Pages:2] [Pages No:41 - 42]

DOI: 10.5005/jp-journals-10083-0924  |  Open Access |  How to cite  |

Abstract

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic premalignant condition more common. It occurs mostly due to betel quid chewing. The characteristic feature of OSMF is the progressive hyalinization of the submucosa. Resistance and progression are the factors that attributes to its nature of affecting the entire mucosa. It causes reduction in mouth opening gradually, which can extend to the pharynx. It is a potentially malignant condition causing fibrosis of the connective tissues. Although medical treatment provides only symptomatic, optimal doses of injection with corticosteroids, hyaluronidase, and local anesthesia locally produced significant reduction in the clinical symptoms. This article is to report a case of OSMF, which was treated similarly and had better results than either agents used individually.

Management of Class II Division I Malocclusion with Carriere Motion Appliance: A Case Report

[Year:2020] [Month:July-December] [Volume:10] [Number:2] [Pages:3] [Pages No:43 - 45]

DOI: 10.5005/jp-journals-10083-0930  |  Open Access |  How to cite  |

Abstract

Most of the patients reporting for the correction of proclined teeth have an underlying skeletal Class II base relation; management of these cases during the growth phase early in the treatment when patient compliance is at their best is advantageous. Although various functional appliances are available for use, the Carriere Motion Appliance (CMA) is simple, not bulky, and easy for the patient to adapt, as there is no bulky acrylic that would hinder the speech or during eating. This case report presents a 14-year-old patient treated with the CMA.

Differential Diagnosis of a Multilocular Radiolucency of the Mandible: A Case Report

[Year:2020] [Month:July-December] [Volume:10] [Number:2] [Pages:3] [Pages No:46 - 48]

DOI: 10.5005/jp-journals-10083-0931  |  Open Access |  How to cite  |

Abstract

Odontogenic keratocyst is classified under developmental cyst which develops from cell rest of dental lamina. It has no specific predilection for age and can occur from infancy to old age, however with a slight predilection for males. The mandibular posterior region is most commonly affected. The cyst has high chances of recurrence. One of the most important radiographic features is that the cyst tends to expand antero-posteriorly within the medullary cavity of the bone without causing bony expansion. A case with odontogenic keratocyst of the left posterior mandible is discussed with clinical and radiographic findings. Clinical examination revealed buccal lymphadenitis with obliteration and tenderness over the left mandibular buccal vestibule. Radiographic examination such as intraoral periapical (IOPA) radiograph and orthopantomogram revealed a multilocular lesion with mixed densities involving the apices of the left mandibular posterior teeth. The corresponding third molar was impacted and the inferior alveolar nerve canal was displaced inferiorly. There was no bony expansion evident on the occlusal radiograph. The features were suggestive of odontogenic keratocyst.

A Review on Nasoalveolar Molding

[Year:2020] [Month:July-December] [Volume:10] [Number:2] [Pages:2] [Pages No:49 - 50]

DOI: 10.5005/jp-journals-10083-0922  |  Open Access |  How to cite  |

Abstract

A common hereditary defect of the oral cavity with grave socioeconomic problem is cleft lip and palate. Although the defect varies in forms and severity, the individuals presented with glitches regarding functions and esthetics. Authors claim that nasoalveolar molding improves facial esthetics and function and has gained more attention. The objective of presurgical nasoalveolar molding comprises improving lip segment, inferior lateral alar cartilages, and alveolar cleft segments. Outcomes of presurgical nasoalveolar molding are promising and hence are encouraged immediately after birth and continued until further corrective surgery is planned. The rationale of presurgical nasoalveolar molding is approximation of the alveolar segments, wherein the surgeon has to perform gingivoperiosteoplasty followed by corrective lip surgery.

Abstract

The introduction of adult NiTi rotary file system for children was a revolution in the field of pediatric endodontics. With the use of these files, cost-effective, consistent obturations were made possible in shorter instrumentation time. The various restraints of adult rotary files such as file length and taper created the need for newer rotary file system. These voids were fulfilled with the advent of exclusive pediatric rotary file—Kedo-S file system. In this article, we have discussed how the innovative pediatric rotary files have made its mark overpowering the limitations of the existing adult rotary file system in children.
