Abstract

This study is a post-operative follow up study conducted with multiple observations in Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Center, Bangalore. The study included 30 cases of distal end radius fractures that were operated with the closed reduction and uniplanar external fixator augmented with k-wire for distal end radius by the principal of ligament taxis. Functional outcome was assessed using modified Green O\'Brien score at each follow up visit. Results: In our study, 14 (46.6 %) patients had excellent results. Whereas, 11 (36.7%) patients had good results and 3 (10%) had fair and only 2 (6.7%) patients had poor results. Most of the fractures united by 12 weeks. Complications associated with the study was stiffness, malunion, sudeck\' sosteodystrophy and pin tract infection. Conclusion: The uniplanar external fixator augmented with k-wire is a good choice in the treatment of distal end radius fractures in terms of providing a good functional outcome.

DOI: 10.5005/pjn-10-2-50  |  Open Access |  How to cite  |

Abstract

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a group of connective tissue disorders which are divided into various distinguishable phenotypes which is characterised by a collagen synthesis defect. The group of related conditions share a common decrease in the tensile strength and integrity of the skin, joints, and other connective tissues. The type of EDS determines the potential obstetric and medical complications. Major diagnostic criteria include joint hypermobility, skin involvement (Smooth and velvety), and absence of fragility or other significant skin or soft tissue abnormalities. There is a continuing need to expand awareness regarding optimal management for EDS hypermobility type relating to manage inherited disorder and prevent complications.

Pfeiffer syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by premature fusion of certain skull bones (craniosynostosis) and other birth defects in the hands and feet. There are three subtypes of the syndrome, with Types II and III being the most severe. There is no specific treatment for Pfeiffer syndrome. Treatment is directed at improving the individual's symptoms. Pfeiffer syndrome is associated with mutations (changes) in the FGFR genes. It affects about 1 out of every 100,000 children. Pfeiffer syndrome can be inherited or can occur due to a new mutation, or change, in the involved gene. In cases of severe Pfeiffer syndrome, a new mutation is typically the cause.
