About Video

This sign indicates weakness of the proximal muscles of the lower limbs. William Richard Gowers of Queen Square, London, described the sign originally in Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy but it may also be seen in rickets, osteomalacia or in any condition leading to pelvic girdle muscle weakness. While getting up from the sitting position, it seems as if the child is projecting his gluteal region first in his attempt; hence the name.
