The gluteal muscles are weak and therefore, the patient has to circumduct the affected lower limb as a compensatory mechanism. This is found in myopathies like, Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy, congenital dysplasia of the hip, spinal muscular atrophy and physiologically, during pregnancy.
